Years ago I rode from NC to Florida in what was called a "Slumberette". Unlike the roomettes, the toilet was NOT covered by the bed when the bed was being used. As I recall, the bed was pretty high up, but there was a window at that level. As well as I recall, there were two parts to the bed which folded down and came together in the middle. This type of sleeper was not the most comfortable but for one night it wasn't bad--and it was inexpensive. I have wondered what happened to them. Anyone know? (It may have been called a "Slumbercoach"---I'm not sure.)

Many of these Slumbercoaches are stored in the railyard just north of Miami. I'm sure there may be some in Beech Grove also. The straight dump toilets are the problem as the cars don't have a waste retention system. The economy sleepers would be a big help to Amtrak in the equipment shortage they will most definitely be experiencing this summer. I rode the Slumbercoaches many times between Chicago & New York & was quite pleased with the comfort & value of the room. Yours Reggie
