I just took my first train ride on the Empire Builder from Portland to Winona, MN. Now I've got "Train Fever"! I know why so many folks are in love with rail travel.

I'm dreaming of a trip for my 30th high school reunion in 2 years and considering making it part of a 30 day rail pass adventure. I'm interested in advice that any of you kind "experts" can offer.

Thanks in advance.

Kris

Sounds like a great adventure. Where is your high school reunion? How far do you plan to travel? The rail pass isn't always the best deal unless you plan on a marathon trip, crisscrossing the US & Canada several times. You should find a travel agent familiar with both Amtrak & VIA Rail. I have several routes that I enjoy more than others, also the direction of travel is important. For example, best travel direction is eastbound on the Empire Builder, the Cardinal & the Capitol Ltd. Westbound on the Zephyr & northbound on the Coast Starlight. There are numerous other factors involved in a train trip including many connections & layovers.
Although I have been very busy for the last few months, a trip 2 years in advance would allow the best possible arrangements & fares to be set. Amtrak only allows bookings 11 months in advance, but many of the other arrangements could be made earlier than that.
If you have any more questions on what I've mentioned please send me an E-mail.
Yours, Reggie
