Hi all,

I hope that someone will be able to help, i am trying to find a cheep way to get from New York (or CT) to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan(or a city near there). I have tied Grey Hound but that is a 2 and 1/2 day trip, cheep BUT 2 and 1/2 days......

Well i might as well tell the story: I live in Denmark and i would like to move (for a few months) to Nipawin where some mates of mine live, but not knowing when i will work again i will have to save my money. My brother lives in Stamford, CT so i would be able to stay there while on my way north and a flight from Danmark to NY is 1/3 of the price then a flight all the way to Saskatoon.
But how do i go about finding what trains to take, how much it would cost and how do i book it?
I hope someone will be able to help and BTW thanks for a great forum and some really good stories.
Regards
The Little Danish Girl

If you want to travel to Saskatoon by train, there is only one train three days a week. Via Rail's The Canadian, Train #1, departs Toronto Ontario on Tuesdays, Thurdays and Saturdays. It arrives in Saskatoon two days later at around 2:00 am. This is an excellent train with coach, diner and sleeping car accomodation. If you go to Via Rail's website at WWW.viarail.ca it will provide all the information, including prices, that you will need. As for travelling from New York to Toronto, there is the daily Amtrak train the Maple Leaf. This is a very poor service that takes some 12 hours, is almost never on time and has no long distance amenities such as a proper dining car service. You might want to consider flying directly into Toronto rather than New York, it may very well be cheaper and certainly more convenient.

Taking the train all the way (Amtrak's "Maple Leaf" from New York to Toronto, followed by VIA Rail's "Canadian" from Toronto to Saskatoon)will take about as long as the bus.

But it's much more comfortable. And you'll get to enjoy a "slice of America" from the train window that you'll never see from a plane.
