I thought we would be on #11 right now. At 2:55pm "Julie" said it was only 10 minutes late, but when we got to the Salem station at 3:15 the agent said it was at least 2 hours late because of a mudslide in Washington. Now its at running 3 hours late.

So here I am waiting with a question: If #11 was south of the slide, why was it delayed? If #11 was north of the slide how did it get through?

I won't be able to read the responses before tomorrow evening, so I'll see you then.

The mudslide didn't take out the entire track, and since the 11 was already out of Tacoma, BNSF let it through instead of backing up a whole bunch of trains to Tacoma just to offload the passengers.

So that's why it was delayed. Regardless if a mudslide damages the track or not, BNSF still implies the no passenger rule for 48-hours, but an exception was made for your train!

Thank goodness for exceptions! I guess they turned #14 at Portland for the next day. I wonder why they couldn't turn it at Olympia.

Our train was 2.5 hours late out of Salem, but only 1.5 hours late at our destination, Salinas. We caught them speeding south of San Jose. A detector recorded a speed of 80mph and a dispatcher or someone immediately told us to slow to 70.

Our trip home was terrific. This time we had a deluxe room and a real Parlor Car. We took advantage of the movie theater for a couple hours. Food was good, and Tom in the Parlor car was both knowledgeable and funny. Our attendant Kiyosi was extremely efficient and attentive, but not very talkative.

Tom explained that this was the first parlor car that went into service, and it was the one they made all the mistakes on. The biggest boo boo was that when running northbound none of the seats face the ocean. The two bench seats are on the left side, with their backs to the ocean. They fixed that in later models by placing the bench seats in the middle of the car facing each other. The swivel chairs are all on the side opposite the ocean. All the other parlor cars have both types of seats on both sides.

I met Tom on my trip last May, Sacramento to Seattle. Very nice guy and quite knowledgeable about the route and Amtrak history.
