Eastbound 48/448 does horrible, I think it is because it always gets stuck behind the Capitol Limited from Chicago to Cleveland.(the Capitol Limited makes twice as many stops and is normally over an hour late out of Chicago) Just the other day 48/448 was over 12 hours late into New York and Boston. 49/449 normally do good until they hit Cleveland, where they then go onto NS track. Hope this helps...

Poor dispatching on the part of CSX doesn't help the Lake Shore's on-time performance either. I've rode this train countless times and have seen us get placed in sidings or just stopped on the mainline to let freights pass by, oh well, your travelling at the mercy of the freight railroad, not much you can do. I can say from experience that BNSF seems to do the best job at keeping Amtrak trains running on time.

Though with all its lateness, the Lake Shore is by far, my favorite Amtrak Train, no doubt! The route it covers has so much history packed into it, even if its late, it still can be a good time. If you ride it, be sure to get in a meal in the dining car, you'll be impressed!

I realize that we assemble for discussion at this Forum largely to relate experiences from riding trains, as distinct from discussion regarding both the public and business policy environment of Amtrak, which is the "mainstay" over at railroad.net, Amtrak Forum.

Now that having been said, let's respectully address Mr. Dailey's (AMTK288)comments above to the effect of "we are at the mercy of the freights'. I cannot agree with comments such as "poor CSX dispatching"; it may be poor dispatching insofar as an Amtrak passenger is concerned, but not insofar as to protect CSX's business interests that actually 'butter the bread'.

I'm certain that Mr. Snow's successor as CSX's CEO does not relish being cussed out in Danish should a Maersk sailing from New York be delayed account late container delivery by CSX. The maritime companies have their costs too, such as idle longshoremen @ easily $45/man-hour, as well as the difficulties, and potential liabilities (care to have your vessel take out a Staten Island Ferry?), of a sailing away from slack tidal conditions (get out your tidal charts and see what the currents are through The Narrows with either a flooding or ebbing tide).

The same applies if he enjoys being cussed out in German should a Chrysler assembly plant close account no inventory from a late CSX delivery - or just plain old English from the other two!

Lest we forget that Passenger Revenues from both Amtrak and the various commuter agencies about comprise not more than 1.5% of Total Railway Operating Revenues, and, as once reported, the value of Union Pacifc's contract with Amtrak comprises about "One Tenth of One Percent" of their Total Revenues (such is likely greater with CSX, but still in the realm of "miniscule").

So we go forth and enjoy our rides (as many know here, I DO ride myself), but let's not loose sight as to the environment in which the Amtrak long-distance trains must operate.

There are two ways to get answers to questions like these that are faster than posting here and waiting for a reply:

1. Go to amtrak.com and click on the "Check Train Status" graphic (on the right-hand side of the page, under all the "fast fare finder" stuff).

2. Call 1-800-USA-RAIL and use their automated system. Of course, you can also ask a live agent, but that takes longer.

That said, here's what I got from amtrak.com just now: Train 48 arrived in New York today at 2:54 P.M., 1 hour and 4 minutes late.

In the other direction, Train 49 arrived in Chicago today at 9:45 A.M., 35 minutes late.

Hi,

Does the LSL's lateness tend to be more severe on weekends or does that have nothing to do w/ it.

Are historical arrival times available somewhere?

Thanks!

REgards,
FoF

Mr Amtrak Railfan, why don't you look on Amtrak's website for train arrival information, rather than asking us to do the work for you?

UncleBuck, the third time is supposed to be a bit harsh, based on the fact that it didn't "sink in" the first two times.

Ok, a little hard I agree, I could have worded it better (sorry). But as Mike says, the repetition was getting a bit boring!

Mr. Amtrak Railfan, the Lake Shore Limited could be late for a wide variety of reasons, many of which have been discussed in this thread. I've been on the Lake Shore where it has run virtually on time, then gets held up for 1 measly train and looses a half hour! There is padding in the schedule throughout the route which will allow the train to make up some time if nothing else causes it to be delayed. Keep in mind that the Lake Shore travels on CSX and I know they have a rule now about reduced speed limits in the event the temperature outside goes above 90 degrees. (Not sure on what rules apply to other railroads regarding heat and speed restrictions) If this happened, I can assure you that the train won't gain any time as I have rode on The Lake Shore when it was under such a restriction. I left Buffalo 2 hours late and got off in Springfield, MA some 5 and a half hours late.

That's why it is often called "The Late for Sure" by the regulars who ride it. Very unpredictable train with timekeeping - as are most Amtrak trains for that matter. But the Late for Sure ranks near the top. Earlier this week (or late last week) it was over 11 hours late getting into New York Penn. Go figure. That's the one you should question. Two to three hours late is typical.
