While in New York I'll be taking the Long Island railroad to long Island from one of those train stations in New york. Has anyone on this board ever done this before?

There are two major train stations in New York City - Grand Central and New York Pennsylvania Station (New York Penn). Both are terribly not that far from each other - midtown. Grand Central is the architectural gem, New York Penn, in my opinion, is nothing more than a glorified subway station. None the less, it is the busiest station in the Amtrak system. Long Island RR utilizes New York Penn Station. Long Island RR, New Jersey Transit and Amtrak uses New York Penn. Grand Central is used by Metro North (commuter line that goes to points north of New York City and Connecticut). Long Island RR is a commuter line, so you will have commuter type trains. There are a lot of trains that leave out of New York Penn for different destinations on Long Island. I think there is one Long Island RR line that is 2+ hours (goes all the way out to the eastern tip). You'll see lots of urban spawl on your Long Island train.

Uncle Buck: I lived on long Island, Lake Ronkonkoma, for many years. Now I live in Queens which is part of NYC, but still part of Long Island. I'm within a couple of miles of the Jamaica LIRR station. That is a major transfer point for passengers to/from the Brooklyn terminal on Atlantic Ave., to/from New York Penn Sta., and to/from Hunters Point Station. When you exit the East River tunnel out of Penn Sta. on the left side of the coach (sitting in direction of the train) you will see Amtrak's Sunnyside Yards where the trains are serviced. The Boston Amtrak trains also enter/exit the East River Tunnel so there might be a chance that you'll see an Acela Express traveling by. But it won't be going as fast as you would think. Inquire if it will be necessary for you to "change @ Jamaica". The schedules are notated with such transfers. Not sure, but if you are on the Port Washington branch you will not have to change at Jamaica. Also you might get a glimpse of the Air Train Terminal @ Jamaica Sta. which will connect to JFK Airport. Operations expect to commence in the Fall.

There are two; the Ronkonkoma Branch, which terminates at Greenport, and the Montauk Branch (terminus in title). Majority of trains require transfer at Jamaica and are mostly peak-hour service; one or two trains may be direct dual-mode service out of NYP though.
Has anyone done this before?
Well, since the LIRR is the largest commuter RR in the Union, then what do you think...?
one of those train stations in New york
Since you already know that the LIRR departs from but one train station in NY (meaning Manhattan), I will not pursue this further beyond criticizing the statement as vacuous.
I dont see a million people on this board
If you see any people "on this board", I suggest that you call your physician. As for the LIRR, you will see lots of human beings on there, so many that you may have difficulty getting a seat on a train, especially during evening rush...

UncleBuck, your original question is NOT the same as the later question:
"Has anyone done this before?"
and
"Has anyone on this board done it before, and could they tell me what its like."
Your original question has been answered perfectly. However, you are now asking a different question (or more specific, if you like).
One question for you: What do you mean by being quite? Quite what? Quite good? Quite informative? Quite helpful? Or do you mean quiet, in which case that is as offensive as the "idiot" comment you made to Irishchieftain. In either case, I suggest you (a) grow up, (b) respect others, and (c) read your postings BEFORE you hit the Submit button.

Hey, guys, play nice. I like to pounce on questions with a technically correct answer (that's how I got the name Literalman applied to me). It's fun but annoying. And my kids do it to me. When I do it to others, it's just for fun. When it happens to me, I had it coming and it's just a joke.
Now, on to the business at hand. I used to live in NJ and made railfan trips (on my own) of nearly all of the Long Island RR. Some of the stations in Queens and Brooklyn did not look like very safe railfanning spots to me. Some spots I did like were Mineola (lots of diesel and electric trains), Port Washington and Oyster Bay (storage yards right by the station), and Montauk (a yard with parlor cars and other cool stuff stored there). Riverhead had a steam engine being restored, and Greenport had a little rail museum at the station. The LIRR has lots of trains and some variety. I like it.

Ipso loquitar. You should know better than to ask dumb questions and to expect to not therefore be treated like a dunce. Also, your reverting to name-calling has further exposed you. I do not think that too many people will be wishing to respond to you in the future...

One of those stations has a small store filled with cool train stuff. The one with trains that go to Connecticut I think. It is not the one where AMTRAK comes in. That same station had (and may still have) a series of large placard boards covered in layers of pictures of people lost in the 9/11 tragedy and still being sought by friends and relatives. "Have you seen..." I saw it when in NYC last fall. Spent a good deal of time reading the flyers - some old and some recently added (replaced?). Very touching and sad. I did not go to the WTC site after that humbling reminder of the brutality people perpetrate on one another. I recommend it to those traveling to NYC. Makes language errors insignificant (and jabs about them inapprpriate at best).

Grand Central Terminal. Neither does the LIRR come in there...yet. Metro-North has it all to itself. Since GCT is not linked with the LIRR, we should respectfully leave it out of this discussion...if the discussion continues.
Also, the "small store" in question is the MTA Subway Museum store, which, unfortunately, is due to close shortly if not already closed.

As starter of this thread I order it to end. So please no posting on this thread after this message. I take anything I said back.

Sorry, I don't take orders from anybody. In reference to the spelling, I can accept mistakes, but when it changes the whole meaning of the sentence, then that is a different matter.
And as for New Yorkers having an attitude problem, that's offensive to them too. Oh, and I don't live and have never lived in NY. I live 3500 miles away from it.
At least you're taking back anything you said. That shows a little maturity - but why say it in the first place?
Just try not to fly of the handle in future, think before you type, and read what you've written. I've seen you on this board a lot and this is the first time there's been any real problem. Let's go back to the old UB, eh?

Im sorry I cant understand what you typed please read your posts before typing next time.
"Oh, and I don't live and have never lived in NY. I live 3500 miles away from it."
My brother just wanted me to post it to see who would be stupid enough to reply to it with a"Im not from NY/ thats offensive reply". Congrats to you Geoffm Although If I would have read it I would reply to it with a Im from Ny reply, not offensive reply to. Shows what I know. By the way dont say that my brothers an idiot for making me post it hes going to IU on an academic scholarship.
But yes Im done replying to this thread after this, I highly suggest you do the same to end this mess. One order you might want to follow.

Wow, this is getting fun! You're getting so wound up it's unbelievable! Please carry on, I haven't enjoyed something like this for ages (but then most people would have given up ages ago). Parrot-fashion copying is interesting - do you not have anything new to say? As I see it, you've repeated other people's comments several times over.
And as for the "quite" comment, saying you got it right first time is somewhat misleading. Look at the date you edited the message: 20 July 2003. Funny that. Anybody would think you'd gone back and corrected after my previous comment... NO! Surely not! That was sarcasm by the way.
To save face, you should have quit ages ago. To carry on is like dangling bait in my face for some more comebacks! And as for the "orders"... nuff said!
Now, I'll try for a third time. Let's get back to civility and start talking trains again!

Its eating away at you like a pack of wild dogs. I think you cant stand to be corrected. Perhaps Childhood nightmares
The reason I went back was to correct jp1822's name, i spelled it jp1922. I dont mispelled other members names. With no reply. You have no proof that I originally spelled it "quiet". Settled.

Why did you have to keep posting, I tried to stop this madness twice already but you never give up. Eh Shimy
I was the first one of us to try to end this but you were to much of an ignorant buffoon, with your "Sorry, I don't take orders from anybody". Not even your mother or father.
Im done with this thread, unless anyone has something about this thread topic.
Good day to you sir or madam

And again! This is getting quite amazing! Ever heard of cache? It's where old pages are stored. So, with a bit of knowledge, you go back through the cache and lo and behold, there's your mistake.
BTW, what or who is Shimy? Is this an American term? FWIW this is a genuine question, I have honestly never heard it before in my life!

Well since your last post was not about trains, I could care less what you said. Especially since you really have nothing that jumps at me to reply to.

For those members of this board who have taken the LIRR, could you please tell me what attractions, or special points of interest(I read some earlier but I want to know about some non train related attractions, i.e. Beaches) that could be found at some stops along the way.
