This is the amount approved by the Senate Committee. Not what may become a bill...the fight is still on.

Yup, and they want to give up $87 billion to "rebuild Iraq".

On top of which, there are now commercials on TV exhorting us to "Tell Congress not to privatize the air traffic control system"...gimme a break, they want Amtrak privatized but not ATC. Both are funded in the same way. How hypocritical.

Actually, Bush's request for $87 billion covers Afghanistan as well as Iraq. $87 billion would fund Amtrak for 48 years at Gunn's current request of $1.8 billion per year.

$87 billion is a lot of money, however, we give over $300 billion of our tax dollars to the poor each year. We've been fighting our "war on poverty" for 40 years, and there is no end in sight....

Well... that's not exactly accurate. We give about $81 billion to the poor, the federal and state bureaucracies eat up the other $219 billion.

Bottom line is, in Houston, we subsidize each and every bus rider to the tune of 90%. The bus rider only pays about 10% of the cost of their bus ride.

Why are people complaining about the money spent on Amtrak? Why can't I pay only 10% for my Amtrak trips? How come bus riders in HOuston are privileged, and I'm not? (Yea, I know... I'm starting to whine like a liberal.....)

Makes that $1.346 billion look like small change, doesn't it. Write your congress critters!

Amazing....the $400 million dollar difference in House vs Senate funding of Amtrak is about what it's costing us to restore rail service in Iraq...
