Hello everyone...My first train experience will be in 2 weeks cross country and back. Can't tell you how excited we are at this point since the plans have been in the making for over a year. I have a question about baggage. We plan on bringing just carry on luggage to the East Coast but I'm sure we'll be making purchases over the three weeks and will want to transport back. Are you allowed additional luggage if checked in on the return trip? This forum has been a blessing in planning our trip. Thank you.

You can use Amtrak's checked baggage service if the stations you board and depart from have this service. It is mostly available at the larger stations.

Have a look at http://www.amtrak.com/plan/baggage.html - it tells you everything you need to know about baggage, both carry-on and checked.

Amtrak has always been, and continues to be, extremely generous when it comes to the amount of bags it will allow you to ship.

With one notable exception, I have had no problems shipping stuff. That one time that I lost a bag, it was found the next day.

In a nutshell, I do believe you can ship up to three reasonably sized boxes or bags, each weighing up to 50 lbs each, all for free.

That's 150 pounds of stuff, not including your carry-ons. That is one heck of a good deal.

Thank you for the responses...my husband is going to hate hearing this. He keeps telling me to remember I can't buy much on the trip. You've made my day. Thanks again
