Two men robbed employees at the Amtrak ticket counter in the Toledo railroad station yesterday, taking an undisclosed amount of money, according to the Toledo blade. Amtrak occupies renovated quarters on the track level of the restored Central Union Terminal.

The men approached the counter about 4 a.m. and asked about a train to Chicago. One man then pulled out a gun; both jumped over the counter and demanded the money at the counter and in the safe before fleeing.

Do you know if that's a federal crime, like robbing a letter carrier or post office?

Whoa, whoa, whoa! You got it all wrong! The pair weren't robbers at all!

One guy was from the Federal Aviation Administration, and the other was from the Interstate Highway Commission. Everybody knows those those agencies deserve more money than Amtrak!

So, you see, it's all just a big misunderstanding.

Dave

It's not surprising that the station got hit.

Toledo Union Terminal was built during the early 50s and has a definite "Twilight Zone" vibe. At 4 a.m., it's definitely one of the spookiest, most deserted, most desolate "city" train stations I've ever encountered.

Which is why it's one of my favorites.

The story doesn't mention how much the villains got away with. Perhaps the amount was simply too embarrassing.

After all, the station only hosts four trains a night. The handful of passengers who typically board there tend to buy tickets in advance (and with credit cards). And while it's possible that some Amtrak crews pick up their pay there, wages are distributed by check. So I'd be surprised if there was much loose cash on hand.

I suspect the culprits realized, very quickly, that they would have fared better at a 7-Eleven.

2 Toledos? The other must be Toledo, Oregon, which can be reached via a Thruway bus from the Coast Starlight....
