I'm taking the Coast Starlight LA-SJ in a couple of days, and have been checking the departure/arrival times to find out how late it might actually be What surprises me is that for the past week, the train has not left LA on time once...not usually late by much, but usually 10-40 minutes. I can't see why it would be so difficult to get the train started on time, unless there are too many other train movements at the same time.

Due to problems in Oregon and Northern California #11 has been many hours late almost every day for a couple of weeks. The number 11 trainset that arrives the previous evening (or more recently the same morning) gets cleaned and re-stocked and becomes #14. It's been surprising #14 has gotten out as early as it has.

Even in good weather months, the CS seems to get a late start. I occasionally see it go by in the Ventura area or somewhere else along the line, and each time it has been at least an hour late.
When I have ridden it they wait until 15 minutes before departure to start general boarding, and it is unrealistic to get everyone seated in that time. I don't know if the boarding is delayed by train cleaning.

As you can see in my screename...I liek the Coast Starlight. It is a very late train always! I still ove it, and it usually does leave quite late, San Jose is thats "SJ" THe last time I went there it was 2 hours late, so I wouldnt bet on it being early.
Just enjoy the ride!
