Let's cover a few key issues.
1. on time performance
2. helpful & cheerful crews
3. quality of food
4. cleanliness of equipment
5. price
6. available 1 person sleepers

***sorry Amtrak, VIA Rail wins on all counts.

reggierail, add:

7. Thickness of mattresses.

VIA still ahead 7-0.

Not having the opportunity to travel long distance on VIA (or across the country on Amtrak) I would choose Amtrak. I would probably agree with the other guys if I had experienced trans-continental trains on both AMTK and VIA.

For my needs and purposes, Amtrak is more convienent, as VIA doesn't opperate any trains in New England!!! Service-wise, I must admit that I was impressed by the station staff and crew on-board the one VIA train I've taken.
