If I ask the website for train availability from Miami to San Francisco after 10/31/4 I get this response:
We're sorry, our booking system was temporarily unable to complete your request. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you. Error MSG: UNABLE-NO SAME DAY CONNECT SERVICE
Does anyone have an explanation?
I'm actually interested in March 05. The Sunset Limited in MUCH cheaper ($340) than 92-29-5 (~$750, I think) but you guys have got me very wary of it; late I don't care about, but bustitution is not acceptable.

"No same day connect" may mean the SUNSET isn't running that particular day. Check which days the Sunset runs (thrice a week each direction, unfortunately.)
If that doesn't work, I can give you a travel agent's email as well as the email of an Amtrak agent that may be able to help.

And not forgetting that San Francisco itself is only served by buses which connect at Emeryville, save for one daily bus each way to Santa Barbara. Assuming that that the SL gets in within two and a half hours of schedule the 9.00am LAX Surfliner departure connects with the bus at SBA and you then have a ten hour bus ride. If you want to do it by train take the Coast Starlight to SAN JOSE and change onto Caltrain for the last leg to SFO (Caltrain schedules aren't shown on the Amtrak website but they run more or less half-hourly from 6.00am to 11.00pm)

It's not the Sunset Limited that gives that message. It's the 92-29-5 (or anything else apparently) that gives that message, but only after Oct 31st. The Sunset comes up OK for March of 05 which is when I'm interested in.
