Hello all

A guy I was talking to today said that spouses of drivers are allowed to ride up front on trips. Is this true?

Many thanks

Seriously? No. The liability involved here is enormous. Many Class One RRs won't let any unauthorised individuals in the locomotives without district or senior management present - or a company attourney.
Same with Class Two RRs & shortlines. No unauthorised persons in the locomotive, period.

"Official" regulations aside, Amtrak employees are human beings. And human beings don't always adhere to the rules.

Since Amtrak has existed for over thirty years, it's a fair certainty that an engineer or two has smuggled a wife, girlfriend, or whatever aboard a locomotive at one time or another.

The last time I traveled on the Empire Builder, the sleeper attendant had a pretty, twenty-something woman camped in his room for the entire run from Seattle to Chicago.

Was she his wife? His girlfriend? His sister? Beats me. All I know is that the toilets remained filthy, the guy never made coffee even once, and his female companion definitely wasn't an Amtrak employee.

I know what you mean! I slept with the Amtrak hostess on a run to Florida on the Silver Service Silver Meteor in the 1970's in her sleeping compartment. She later became my fiancee! Though, she did not neglect her duties--did the fashion show in the club car, ran bingo games and worked with kids doing games. At night after midnight she was a lover!
