I love to look at the rail sale on the Amtrak website.

I am planning a vacation out west in June and would love to take advantage of the sale. On todays look a trip from Chicago to LAX and LAX to Chicago is $58.00 each way on the Southwest Chief. Wonderful prices! These prices are good thru 2/10/02.

I guess my questions are:
1. Has anyone booked online thru the rail sale?
2. If I booked Chicago to LAX, can I get off at an earlier station? On the return trip, can I get on at a later station? (i.e. Chicago to Flagstaff)
3. If I buy now thru Amtrak for June, will I be able to cancel and signup for one of these on-line specials should they be offered during my vacation time?

Thanks, Any insight would be helpful!

Try a sample booking on Rail Sale but use Flagstaff as your end point. It should prorate the already discounted CHI-LOS fare for you.

Note eventhough the rail sale pages say fares are good for travel between xx/xx date and yy/yy date, some sales are good only on offpeak travel days i.e. Tues/Wed/Thur travel, between those dates. I see that on the Bakersfield to Jack London Sq route especially.

Also you can't book sleepers in advance on rail sales, and you can't apply vouchers towards the cost either.

Regarding cancelling another ticket in case a Rail Sale pops up, I suggest speaking with a ticketing agent and reading the refund/cancellation fine print first.
