I haven't made our coach reservations yet for our August one-way train trip, but plan to soon. I asked the agent about the cancellation policy and she said as long as we don't pick up our tickets it's FULLY refundable. When I read the policy online it looks like there's a 10% fee. She said if you don't actually pick your ticket up, there is no charge. It doesn't mention this on their website. Does anyone know the policy? She said they do charge your credit card now, so essentially it's pre-paid.

While hopefully there will be no need to Xcl, I must concur.
I had to scrub an April 01 trip to Washington that was booked and paid through the web February 14. On March 1 ("breakling up is not always hard to do"), the decision to scrub was made. I telephoned USARAIL and because tickets had not been printed and the scrubbing was done one month in advance, there would be no service fees.
On a March 8 American Express statement, the transportation was shown as credited in full.

Thanks, Mr. Norman...Gilbert...Gil? What may I call you?
The agent said it would be fully refunded even if we waited till the day of departure and just didn't show up at the station and pick up the ticket. She said if we couldn't pick one up ourselves beforehand (we don't have a train station in my city), then bring your reservation # and they have it in the computer or go to one of those QuikTrak machines. She didn't mention anything about cancelling a month before. I'll have to call again to get that clarified.
I'm still up in the air as to whether we prefer to keep our plane reservation (which is also fully refundable up to a year)...OR stay an extra day in Seattle and ride in Coach for 24 hours+. I know! You don't recommend coach. But, if we ride the train----> Coach it is. Frankly, I love those roomy seats and being up where the activity is. Not so sure how I'll enjoy the night, though.
I think my biggest concern in taking the train back is just the fact that we'll be gone almost 2 days longer and I worry about our little canine (they wouldn't let me write d-o-g) and 3 cats and for the people taking care of them. Sheesh. I guess I should get over that, eh?
