DD and I are getting ready for our Amtrak Adventure. Looking at the schedule, I'm wondering on what segments we will have meals in the dining car (we have a sleeper).

I know the meal schedule on the SWC. WE board the Capitol in CHI at 5:35 - I assume there will be dinner. We arrive Washington DC at 11:59 A.m. - Is there a possibility of lunch?

On the return we get off the Capitol in CHI at 8:25 a.m. Will there be breakfast before that?

We board the Silver Meteor in Wash at 7:35 p.m. - will there be dinner available? I know on other routes we've been on, if you board before 8:30 there is dinner available. We get off at 12:20 p.m. Will there be lunch?

Same question on the return about dinner on the Silver Star.

Thanks for any help. DD and I both have low blood sugar and need to plan ahead. We always have snacks, but would need more if we need to cover a meal - or hit the lounge and pay.

thanks

IN regards to your questions, The Capital Limited

does not serve lunch arriving into wash. DC due to its arrival time, unless it is running 2 or more hours late. The capital into Chicago serves a limited breakfast and only for a limited amount of time in the morning, again longer if the train is late.

Regarding the Meteor, yes dinner is served leaving DC, lunch may be a problem as they usually
start around 12:00 or maybe after they depart Orl
again unless the train is late, and then you will have time for lunch.

The limited breakfast may mean an 0530 start and only serving until 0700, maybe 0730. So get up early if you plan to eat!

Bear in mind the lounge car is often closed for up to an hour before arrival into the train's destination, for stocktaking purposes. So get your snacks beforehand!

As long as we are discussing mealtimes, what is the breakfast time on the Empire Builder traveling east? I will be riding in the sleeper from Portland to Minneapolis/St. Paul next month. How early does serving start the first morning in Montana. Also, will I be able to get breakfast aboard prior to reaching St. Paul if the train is on time? If it is late?

Thank you for the help!

I think the diner opens at 6:00 on the #28 eastbound. I have always been able to eat before I got off at MSP. You can always finish while the train sits in the station til 7:45, but I have never had to do this.

About 2 blocks away (south to University Ave., then right) there is a Subway and Bonnie's Cafe with big portions of good greasy food.
