Having read the executive summary of the ARC report...I'm writing the railroads I hold shares in in the very near future.
Which of the railroads needs the passenger services of Amtrak to operate a super-premium mail and express operation? IMHO, none.
If I were both UP and BNSF, I'd be standing by with a timetable and a commitment to First Class (ie, scheduled on the employees timetable and the STB tariff) M&E service on the Chicago-Seattle, Chicago-SF, Chicago-LA, Houston-LA, SL-Cheyenne, and LA-Seattle routings.
In other words, compete with the trucks on I-10, 40, 70, 80, and 90, not to mention US 101.
In the meantime, if you are really interested in the commercial railroads operating passenger service again, I commend owning their stock to you. The Boards of Directors listen to shareholder votes ... but you will have to get out there and get those votes!
