May children travelling in first class order off the adult menu in the dining car? Every train trip we take, the waiter or waitress approaches us with some statement such as ,"And for the kids we have mac and cheese!" To be fair, we have encountered this other places as well, especially where the meals are included in the fare, such as on cruise ships and at all-inclusive resorts. But could my girls not have steak, which they love? Last summer I tried to order the salads with chicken for them, and the waitress wanted them to share one.

My DD is 13 now, but every time we've travelled she and DS have ordered off the adult menu. On rare occasions, she has ordered kids - a couple of times they gave her 2 portions of mac & cheese. I wouldn't think there would be an issue. We actually had one server tell us when we WANTED to share a meal with her - she was about 10 at the time that they would just bring her her own as it was paid for.

On one occasion, I've seen a member of the dining car staff give a parent a hard time. The daughter (who was about 10) wanted steak. The crew member said something to the effect of, "Oh no, she has to choose from the kids' menu."
The mother stared the guy dead in the eyes, as if she was about to rip his face off. Then she calmly said, "My daughter is having steak. This discussion is over."
The kid had steak.

I once saw a 5 or so year old boy being ask if he wanted to order off the kids or adult menu, and they gave him the choice. I would be rather suprised to see an SA pressuring someone to order off the kids menu, If I were you I just wouldnt take "no" for an answer, your sleeping car fare is very expensive and children deserve to eat what they want, not some cheap grilled cheese or Macaroni and cheese.

We ordered for our granddaughter, then 3, off the adult menu last year when we went to Seattle. There were no questions about it, especially when they saw how she packed the food away. And after the first night, the servers called her by name.
