If you look at Amtrak's January 2006 company progress report, the mechanical section notes that some amfleet 1's are in storage. What's this about?

They are just plain surplus, Eric.

The Acelas are up and running again, the Clockers have been discontinued, all the West Coast corridors now use locally procured equipment.

But we should note the absence of any initiative either to sell or scrap any of the cars. Losses from derailment incidents have been quite minimal and in the range of some 15 cars over the fleet's now thirty year service span.

Nuff?

Possibly because they are not needed.

There used to be a bunch on the storage tracks in Los Angeles after the Surfliners arrived. Then they left all of a sudden. The only single level equipment regularly stored in LA now are some horizon cars. Not sure were the Amfleets went. Maybe Michigan?
