Wow, sorta reminds me of the days of the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" certificates.
In 2001, the Sunset Limited I was on was 13 hours late into Tucson -- meaning we couldn't use the hotel room there we pre-payed for and also lost the rental car we had booked. I got a certificate for the entire cost of the trip (over $2,000) and ended up going in a deluxe bedroom the next year between CHI and DEN on the CZ for free.

Wow, you are really lucky! I was also bussed and was in a Sleeping Car when onboard the train. However, I did not use Guest Rewards points (since I do not have enough) to book. I did though call Customer Relations and was told I will be getting some kind of "Coupon/Voucher" in a week or so.
