I need advice. I bought a rail sale ticket, Train #4 for the whole run, LA to Chi. The fine print says that upgrading may be possible once travel has begun.

I don't think April 3 is a big travel day, so what are my odds and how much do you think I'd have to pay?

Also suggestions on how to get the most bang for my buck. Sleeper for some of the distance, who to ask, sacrifice a small chicken to the sleeper car gods...you know that kind of thing.

BTW...I'm flying from Cleveland to LAX to see the Indians play the Angels on April 2. That's what I tell my non-railfan friends at least is the main reason. Really it's the ride back. #4 to Chicago, then #40 to Akron, Ohio.

Not sure how I'm going to get from LAX to Anaheim yet...but that'll come.

Last year's trip to see the Indians play the NY Yankees was easier...subways to everywhere.

Out of LAX the AC usually collects the coach tickets right after departure. Ask him/her if an upgrade is possible. If they don't know they will have to check w/ conductor. There should be a manifest on board that can be checked for sleeper availability & where along route they are available. Cost of upgrade will depend on what types of sleeper is available & whatever discounts may apply. Just be patient as there is alot of work 2/b done out of LAX. Have fun.

If you don't mind driving on the LA freeways, you may want to consider renting a car from Hertz at LAX and returning it at the LA Union Station. Hertz is the only rental car company located at the Station.
Union Station and the surrounding area is also a nice place to spend some time.
Edison Field is very nice. I recommend trying the BBQ turkey leg available at the concession area near center field.
My wife & I are also baseball fans and have visited 22 MLB Parks. In April, we will be taking the train, and as part of our trip, we will be visiting Jacobs Field and four other parks.

Jacobs Field is the nicest ballpark I've ever been to. I LOVE watching the game there. I hope you enjoy it. We've sold out every game in the past, but tickets have been a bit more available last and this year.

BTW...I just set up a car via Hertz per your advice. Nice to pick up a few more Guest Rewards points along the way.

Still hoping to hear from someone regarding what to expect for upgrade to sleeper enroute. It looks like the normal fare now is between $450-500 for the full run. Anyone?

There are 2 car rentakl agencies at LAUPT. Can't remember name of the other but they are right next to each other b/4 you go into baggage claim.

Glad I could help. You will find lots of answers to your questions on this forum. I know I do. The people really know their stuff.
BTW, I did visit the old Cleveland Stadium for an Indians game back in 92. If you get a chance someday visit Pac Bell Park. The Giants went from one of the worst parks (Candlestick/3Com) to one of the best. Try the garlic fries!
