I'm looking to do a big bike trip in upstate New York in August. My bike is in NYC already--not Baltimore--so I don't need to worry about transporting it there. Ideally, I'd like to take a train to Albany or Rome, and then do 50 or 60 miles, returning to the train the following day, to return to NYC. Anyone know good bike routes upstate? I was thinking along existing parts of the canal, but I am a fairly experienced rider and would like some more challenging terrain. I will be taking my mountain bike. Any recommendations for where to detrain, bike routes, and where to retrain? Also, do any trains along the Empire Corridor accept bikes? Do they need to be boxed?

Thanks, eric

Well, I've got 10,600+ miles on one of my bikes and I grew up near Rochester, does that count?

E-mail me. I don't have nearly enough time to type the book involved there.

The only train that will accept a bicycle is the Lakeshore (which doesn't stop in Wome) and you will need to buy an Ambox. They are sturdy and cheap, last thing I heard they were between two and five dollars.

How far are you looking to ride?
