During the now ended August heat wave, Amtrak trains in the NE Corridor, which can operate up to 150mph, were restricted to 80 mph.
Save special signalling equipment that principally exists along some portions of the BNSF "Chief' route, Amtrak trains elsewhere are operated at a maximum speed of 79mph.
Oh, and why 79 and not simply a round 80? This arises from a government order some 50 years ago stating that, absent the special signalling equipment, trains shall operate at a speed "not to exceed 80mph". Ergo, 79.

Must admit, if *that* was what he was referring to, then I missed it too. It would probably be the 186mph club rather than 80mph though. A more common name is the "mile long club".

Late last night I saw the original post, which was of questionable taste and now deleted. I wondered how long it would last. Curiously, the originator of this thread (as well as "Coke or Pepsi") was a different person last night from the one listed now.
