Hello fellow 20thCentury Ltd.fan. Yes if only Amtrak's menu was like that. But I doubt customers will pay those prices. I would. Is it comparable to Amtrak prices? I haven't "dined" on Amtrak for some time.

I think it is a fair statement to "the Centuries passing in the night" as well as to any others interested, that, Builder and AT notwithstanding, Dining on Amtrak is a thing of the past, if in fact it ever was.
You are of course still fed; and I don't think SDS portions are "skimp". But Dine? That is an adios.

Well I guess the question is what makes a good dining experience as opposed to eating to fill the stomach? Certainly good food is a big part of that but a leisurely dinner helped with a bottle of wine and a great view out the window makes the experience for more enjoyable than say a Denny's.
As I posted previously, our dinner recently on the Cascades, even though nuked and served in microwave platters, tasted far better than even the food on the Builder and the service was unobtrusive and efficient. But again, sunset over puget sound had a lot to do with a fine dining experience.
So, in my view eating in a diner is still one of the best reasons for taking a LD train (you just have to work a little harder at it on some trains).
