HOW COMFORTABLE IS THE SUPERLINER COACH SEATING ON LONG DISTANCE, OVERNIGHT RIDES. (ON THE SOUTHWEST CHIEF) dO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS ON WHERE TO SIT IN THE CAR?

I used to ride coach overnight a lot in the pre-Superliner days. I took an overnight trip on the Starlight last year, and it was reasonably comfortable. I wouldn't recommend it for more than one night, though.
As for where to sit, it can be noisier at the ends near the doors. In the center the view out th eother side is blocked by the stairwell. Other than that they are all about the same. But your attendant will probably determine where you sit.

It can be noisier at each end of the car, but I like to get a seat in the "front row." You have more legroom (although every seat in the car has a lot of room), and you have space to store some of your belongings in front of you, against the car's wall. You don't have a pull-down tray in front of you, though.

There are differing opinions here. I differ with Eic. I like the back of the car. Yes, it is true that it is louder, and it seems a little more bumpy too. But I like to be able to see out good. If I am in the back, I can see through the windows in front of me and can see what is coming up ahead. In the front, it is difficult to see towards the front of the train, you mainly can just see out sideways.
I feel that coach seats are quite comfortable. They are much larger and more comfortable than bus or plane seats. And actually, I prefer to travel in coach than in a bedroom, if I am only on the train for one night in a row. Usually I plan my trips so I can stay in a motel every other night.

My main gripe about coach seating is that the attendants are biased towards helping families with kids and senior citizens. I understand their desires to sit together, however, I like to sit by the window too. When I arrive at the station 90 minutes before departure in Chicago, I am still made to wait for people who got there after me to board the train first and get all of the seats. Then they double up single passengers together. Several times I have gone coach, asked for window seats when I knew they were available, and was denied. This irritates me, and is one reason why I only go first class on Amtrak.
