genny, as you may or may not know, the Amtrak station is in Renssalaer, on the E. side of the Hudson.

I stay at the Econo Lodge Downtown in Renssalaer, 110 Columbia Turnpike, not far from the station, when I go to Saratoga or the Berkshires.

I would not stay in Rensselaer myself but do recommend the Hampton Inn in downtown Albany. You will have to take a taxi to get there, but it's a nice hotel with a good breakfast and pretty good Triple A rates (and probably also AARP), especially on weekends. The taxi from Rensselaer across the river to/from the hotel costs about $15, and there are usually cabs at the station (but you can phone).

The Crowne Plaza in downtown Albany is also nice, but the rates tend to be higher. They provide free shuttle service to and from the train station but not free breakfast.
