I will be taking the Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago this July. Will the deluxe bedroom comfortably accomodate and sleep 3 adults? Or are the bunks designed to only accomodate 2 adults. Thank you.

The rooms are capable of sleeping 3 adults, 2 on the lower level & 1 in the upper. The lower berth is about as wide as a double bed, but only one side is open. The person sleeping against the wall would have to climb over the other person to get up during the night. Reggie

Concur with Mr. "reggierail" Atwell; however why not, if possible, pick up a Standard for presumably your adolescent child and have some real comfort on the trip?
The "troopship" sleeping conditions will simply detract from the enjoyment of your trip, and the extra $350 for the Standard will add far more to the travel experience than you ever paid for it.

I thought only 2 adults & a small child were the maximum allowed in a deluxe room. However, the internet allows you to book as many as 4 adults into a deluxe room. Sleeping on the upper bunk would require 2 very, very, very thin people. Has anyone actually seen 4 adults in a deluxe room on a overnight trip ? My wife & I took the CZ from EMY to CHI in a deluxe room last month. It's a great trip. Have fun!

Not sure about what the web site will allow you to book. The travel planner states superior comfort for 2 passengers. Amtrak tariffs allow up to 3 adults or children to be booked in a deluxe room. exceptions can be made & space limitations would be noted in the record. I would book 2 adults & 2 small children in a deluxe room although it would be cheaper & more comfortable to book the family room. 4 people in a deluxe would only allow meals for 3 people whereas the family bedroom would allow meals for all 4 people at a lower price. You would not have a shower or bathroom in your room, but both would be right down the hall. I never use the shower in the deluxe anyway, I prefer the larger common shower. Reggie

Although the reservation internet site does seem to indicate 4 adults can be booked into 1 deluxe room, the travel planner (pg 69) reads, "some deluxe bedrooms can be combined for a deluxe suite accomodating 4 people".
