i just got back from Boston. Not sure where you can stay, i stayed at a hostel near Fenway Park. I didnt see any tour buses either (that i noticed). I do highly recommend a boat tour to Boston Light, the only lighthouse staffed by the coast guard. Its about a 45 minute boat ride from the edge of the harbor. They give you an hour and a half on the island the lighthouse is on, then back. Very good trip.

I can not recommend where to stay ---- it is a day trip for me.
Depending on how much time you have, you might want to consider a trip to Portland, ME on the Amtrak DownEaster. Portland is also a great city to visit.

thank you for all your advice. we left the morning the replies came in. my fault it was a last minute trip. we stayed at the fairfield inn in woburn. purely by accident it was right on the double track lowell to boston north station line. the west end of the parking lot abuts the tracks. it is also the line for the DOWNEASTER which passes by 10 times a day. also saw a few freights pass by. the commuter station is about 1 mile from the hotel with plenty of parking. a train lovers hotel for sure. the hotel is very nice. we did do boston harbor and a tour out of north station. lots of history. also took a day trip on the DOWNEASTER portland is nice but it rained all day. again thank you.
