When I took my short jaunt between FUL and LAX, I noticed what looked like old Heritage or Viewliner coaches or sleepers, not sure, sitting in the Amtrak Yard in LAX. Any ideas?

No such thing as a Viewliner coach, and I'd be very surprised if a Viewliner sleeper showed up out here---no reason for it.
I'm not sure what you saw....could it have been the Horizon (single-level) equipment that is used on 798/799? (Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo Surfliner train).

I thought that was the answer, too, Smitty. I checked a couple of days in the next week or so and noticed that those trains are only operating as far as SBA. It's a bus between SLO-SBA. Is this going to be permanent?

It might be. Having lived in Vegas for 11 years I am rusty on my equipment names now.

Frank---sorry I didn't answer you sooner. Is it just me, or does the "email replies" option not work on this forum any more? I used to get an email to the threads I subscribed to, but that doesn't seem to happen any more. Of course, it could always be operator error!
Regarding 798/799 stopping at SBA, this will continue until January 14th. The UP is replacing ties north of you. This will also effect 792 on weekends. However, this does NOT effect the Coast Starlight.
