We have an AMTRAK VACATION planned for the last week in July. We have NOT canceled. We can not go any other time...this was planned in January! It appears that Washington is very close to getting Amtrak the short term financial help they need. So close and yet no final decision... Anyone have an idea of when things will be resolved? Sounds like now Amtrak will run atleast through the rest of this week. President Bush, Congress and Mineta have all said they do not want AMTRAK to die. GOOD! Questions: What can continue to do to help? AND Does anyone have an idea when "the powers that be" will sign the bottom line for the money Amtrak needs to get through the summer?
THANKS!

It looks like Amtrak will get its short-term funding in some form quite soon (most likely before the end of the week). According to CNN, this money would avert a shutdown until at least July 8th (???)-don't ask me where they got this date), but KEEP YOUR TRAIN RESERVATIONS- it looks like Amtrak will make it through to at least Oct. 1, and then we will have the $1.2B to discuss. Keep those letters to Washington flowing. According to an inside source, it DOES help. I don't even think Bush and Mineta know when Bush and Mineta are planning to give Amtrak their funding, but most sources are saying... "Soon."
