I have a quick question about the Texas Eagle. As I understand it, train 21, 321 and 421 are just the different segments of the trains that split off at certain points of the trip. That part I understand.
I plan on taking the Texas Eagle on Thanksgiving day from Chicago to STL and eating a nice turkey dinner on the train. First off I noticed there are three different ticket prices for 21, 321, 421 which I'm guessing depends on how many seats are left on each segment. What confuses me is that 21 and 421 allow you to choose Upper Coach and Lower Coach, but 321 just has a selection for Coach in general. Is the 321 segment of the train also a Superliner car and if that's the case, can you just get on with your ticket and sit upstairs? or is it a set of single level coaches attached to the back of the train? I'm guessing it's a general seating Superliner car, but I wanted to make sure before bought a ticket. It might sound dumb, but like sitting on the upper level.

The lower level of Superliner coaches is reserved for the elderly and handicapped.

And is not 321 the designation for one superliner coach operating CHI-STL only?

Thanks for the help. I saved about $20 going with the 321
Yeah, the different train numbers are for the different segments. There is a lot of traffic from CHI to STL so they add another car just for that leg of the trip.

Some Superliner coaches have a lower level seating area; some do not and use the space either for baggage storage or for a cafe.

I'd be interested to know after the trip whether they actually seat you in the 321 coach (presumably the last car on the train so that it can be dropped in St. Louis without additional switching) or just allow you to go wherever when you board.

I was just ticketed for 321 to StL but I didn't pay attention to whether it was last car. However, I was assigned seating as I boarded.
