The nation's freight railroad industry averted a potentially costly strike on Thursday after resolving differences with two of its unions and agreeing to extend talks with a third.
Unions are the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWE), and the American Train Dispatchers Association. These three unions make up about 40 percent of rail labor which is unionized.
Dispatchers handle Amtrak trains on host railroads. That is how Amtrak would have been affected.

For ready information, here is more regarding the NRLC, which is noted in the linked Associated Press (courtesy of Yahoo News) material provided by Mr. Chief:
Amtrak is not party to The Conference; rather they bargain separately with their employees' representatives. However, as Mr. Chief noted, had the ATDA walked off a Class I property save KCS, that would have affected Amtrak operations away from the Corridor.
