I was thinking that it might be fun, for a brief getaway, to take the Coast Starlight on the way to Crater Lake, Oregon.

Questions:

Are there motor coach (bus) shuttles between Klamath Falls and Crater Lake? I looked around the internet without much luck. When I found a possible shuttle route, I found little information with regard to timetables and pickup locations.

Chemult is closer than Klamath Falls, Is there a bus service between Chemult and Crater Lake?

I assume Crater Lake Lodge would be the best lodging (?). Any other suggestions?

Is there some sort of village at Crater Lake? Some place to walk around, go to a restaurant, etc.

Thanks.

Richard

You might want to contact the Klamath Chamber of Commerce about shuttles to Crater Lake. I am not aware of any.

There is a trolley tour around the lake that departs the park village area near the lodge.

I suggest renting a car in Klamath Falls. On your way to Crater Lake, consider also visiting Train Mountain and/or the Collier Logging Museum. Both are near Chiloquin, OR.

October 10-12, there's a rail excursion from Emeryville to Klamath Falls. Package options include trips to Crater Lake or Train Mountain. If this is of interest, I suggest calling them and see what is available.

Mr. Zephyr:

Thanks for the information. The trolley car, around the lake, looks interesting.

The southbound Starlight gets into Klamath quite late at night. For the return, perhaps a bus to Medford or Bend might be better. I could then fly to Portland then back home.

To deal with the late and uncertain KFS SB Starlight, I've rented a room at the Maverick Motel. It's basic lodging, low rates, and a short walk from the station. Nearby is The Creamery, brewpub of the Klamath Basin Brewing Co. The motel is on the edge of downtown Calamity Falls where other eateries, museums, and businesses are walkable.

Doing a little exploring, I see there is a shuttle bus which departs from the Klamath Amtrak station, mid morning. It returns to Klamath Falls around 3pm in the afternoon.

I also found this video with regard to the Crater Lake Trolley:

The trolley was part of the GNRHS (Great Northern Railway Historical Society) K-Falls convention I attended three years ago. It was very good, with much of the credit going to an excellent driver.

Hope you enjoy your trip.
