I'm looking at taking the Cardinal from Chicago to Washington DC. I need a rail vacation, however, money is tight.
It is $625 to have a roomette the whole route.
It is $12 to take a coach seat from Chicago to Dyer, Indiana then $480 to take a roomette from Dyer to Washington DC.
So I can save $130+ doing it this way and still get dinner in the dining car. Is this frowned upon? Or is this Amtrak's fault for wonky pricing?

I think no one will frown. If anyone says anything, just say sleeper from Dyer is all you could afford! And even $492 is a lot for a sleeper on the Cardinal. Don't forget, dinner should be in quotations marks. Suggest you have a nice late lunch in Chicago!
