Hi, just wondered out of curiousity, I live in the south of England, when I go on the 1st generation old fasioned slam door trains (forget the class no.), sometimes when the trains in the station (a terminus normally), it makes funny noises when at a stand still like pumps of some sort or something moving up and down or whatever.

What actually is this, is it something to get the train warmed up or something to help keep it going, its hard to describe the noise but may sound like a generator or pump, and it sounds like somethings going up and down and maintaining something, any ideas? also this noise starts up at intermediate stations and stops at times.

Also on the Thameslink trains, when the train pulls out it makes a weird humming noise that settles down when it picks up speed, is that a special motor to get it up to speed or just the same one with a high starter current to get it up and going?

Cheers, always wondered this, as i travel a lot by train everyday.

The only thing I can figure out is an air compressor for the brakes or maybe those doors.

cheers, guess the air compressor would be to cool the brakes down, wonder why they would use it for the doors, they r slam doors on this type of train rather than the modern compressed air pnumatic doors used on some more modern trains.

cheers again

The sound you describe sounds like it may be the air compressor used to charge the brake line. You probably notice it right after they close the doors because the often when the train is just about to pull out (which would be right when the doors close), they release the brakes and then the brake like recharges. As for the humming noise, if its an electric M.U. train, that's just the acceleration of the traction motors.
