I'm not sure if this is the forum to post this question but here goes.
How exactly to the crossing signals work? I'm a pretty avid rail fan and like to hit areas near crossings with two tracks to catch all the action. I have noticed that when I'm near a siding and a train approaches the crossing, the signals activate and the gates come down. But now this particular train is stopping in the siding to await another train. When it stops, the signals deactivate and the gates go up. Now, when this train is ready to move again, the signals again activate and the gates go down. Is it electrical in the track or does the engineer have something remotely or what!!! This has always bugged me. Help me so I can stop losing sleep!!!

It is electrical in the track. there is another thread elsewhere under Amtrak that has several back and forths on this subject.
