Rode the Baltimore light rail line from BWI to downtown Baltimore with some coworkers last August. Interesting route, some of it travels on the old B&A right of way.
Some of the passengers are really off-the-wall though

It also runs on the former Northern Central from where it crosses over Amtrak to just after Timonium.

I know the original post is a little old, but for another "iron triangle", how about Washington DC to Baltimore on MARC on the B&O line to Camden Station, then the Baltimore Light Rail between Camden and Penn Station, then return to Washington on the Pennsy line, either MARC or Amtrak. OK, the railroads are now CSX and Amtrak. I do not have the schedules at hand, so do not know what the elapsed time would be, probably about 3 hours minimum. I think you could start at either end and the schedules would determine which way works best. You could also make part of your Washington end of the trip on WMATA, as well. It gives you a ride over the oldest railway line in the US, on the B&O near Baltimore, as well. This gives you the possibility of diesel hauled, electric light rail with overhead wire, electric hauled 11kv line, and third rail electric.

That Washington-Baltimore triangle sounds interesting. Didn't much care for the locals on some of the Baltimore LRT (off-the-wall might be better phrased as watch-your-back, kind of like what espeefoamer referred to over in Sacramento).
