Has anyone else seen/heard some of the new crossing signals? UP has installed some on the new extended Laurel Park Rd grade crossing at Alameda St. (near Dominguez/Carson, CA) on the Alameda corridor. The "bells" are electronic and sound a little like chimes.

If they are like the ones BNSF use they are Electronic bells. I was talking to a signal maintainer. The bells look to me like a canister cut open with a wedge to direct the sound toward a certain area. As for what makes the bell sound I don't know.

Yes, the "bells" sure have a different look to them. For that matter the flashers looked different too...the red lights looked more like round computer or TV screens instead of bulbs, but that may have just been the lens.

The lens they are using are casting a purple tint. It still lights up red but has a little purple tint to it also. They also might be trying to find different ways to reflect the light to make it brighter.
