I had a ggg grandfather that worked his way up to engineer in NH in the 1880's. He was killed in a wreck in 1886. The article does not specify what the line was called ("Northern" is as close as they get). I was given a lantern that has engraved on it "B L & C RR". Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I might find what line that might have been? I would be very grateful!

I asked about the name B L & C RR on the trains.com forums and this is a reply that I got that might help you. If I get any more replies with additional information I will post them here. I hope this helps.

While we are on the SWAG train lets try "Boston, Lexington and Concord" The nick name woudld be " The Minuteman Route. Sounds good to me:

Emma, do you have any other clues about those initials you can give us? Where'd you see them?

I am actually asking about this on the behalf of KBryan on trainweb who posted this on trainweb.

A clue would be if you could find out where the accident was,or where your ggg grandfather lived or is buried. That might give the general area.

You might Post a photo of the LANTERN with the Initials on it. Someone then might be able to 'Date' the Lamp for it's time frame.

More advice from trains.com railroad forum.Posted by SDR_NORTH on 10/6/05

The Northern Railroad is on this map. It looks like it starts in Concord and ends in White River Junction.
