I have a 6' deep by 11' wide heated space for the new layout. I have a copy of the Atlas layout design software which I feel is somewhat cumbersome. Are there other software applications available? I model in N-Scale.

There are lots to choose from. I've been using XTrkCad for several years and found it to be an outstanding piece of design software.

You might also check with the NMRA layout design special interest group(SIG) at www.nmra.org, to see what there resources are. I know they are very active in assisting people with design ideas.
