Greetings! Going to begin benchwork for long awaited model RR project. I want to avoid "sound" of RR running over tracks that doesn't "sound" like RR. I might file tiny notch every scale 39' to achieve the clickety clack one SHOULD hear. (Thanks to previous post) Can someone tell me in what fashion should the benchwork be done to avoid that "hollow" sound of model RR running over wood?? This means I need reccomendation for thickness of table top over the framework. What wood and thickness should be used? Also what wood for buildups for elevated track? What roadbed materials will cause best sound? Etc...... Please help....

After building the basic frame, go with 3/4" plywood for the sub roadbed. Then use 1/2" Homasote for the roadbed. this will give you a nearly silent roadbed system. You could also use cork roadbed over the homasote and that would probably quiet things up a bit more. To get the wheel noise I assume you will be using metal wheels ? .....Mike

homeabed would be a good choice for roadbed as it comes in straight and curveable sections and is tapered on the edges to a ballast profile. See the model magazines to find out if it is still available. Have fun & keep on railroading

I used "EasySpline" roadbed as described in MR a couple of years ago. This is a laminated masonite roadbed, made up of five 3/4" wide strips of 1/4" masonite on edge, glued together into a mass of masonite 1-1/4" wide and 3/4" thick.
It's a bit more labour-intensive than plywood, but spline is much more efficient than flat roadbed (in terms of material usage), and the masonite is nice and dense - the only sound that comes from the mainline is wheels on rail!
