So what do you think about the trend in ready-to-roll rolling stock in HO Scale? Is it a sea-change in the hobby or just a phase?

I see it as a trend that is most likely to stay around. The quantity of ready to run rolling stock anf locomotives is likely to increace but in my opinion will never really replace kits as the dominant form of rolling stock aquisition and ownership.
The only company that really is going all out replacing their kits with ready to run is Walthers. The rest of the major kit makers I think are making quality ready to run lines for the beginners market to suppliment their kit lines. The rest of the RTR manufactures have always been ready to run and are just improving and upgrading their lines.
