Where can I get the part number for the carbon brushes for the Lionel 2046 Hudson motor? Can I use other carbon brushes without having to find an actual replacement part?

Call Lionel and talk to the Tecks. They have always been helpful. I think they are only "in" Wed thru Friday, not sure. Number is 586-949-4100 Extension 1360. --I've found that it's useless to talk to the customer service folks. They have never seemed to me to be interested enough to try to understand what you want and didn't seem to know much about their products. The Tecks though seemed really helpful.
