What is a SHAY? What are some of the "names" of locomotives and what are each type used for? How can I begin to understand the differences? What sort of locomotive was used on Florida East Coast in the 50's to pull loads of citrus or orange juice in that area?

The Shay was built for logging in steep mountains. They have three vertical cylinders beside the boiler. Wheels are all gear driven, and very low gears at that. When a shay is going top speed of 12 MPH it sounds like another loco doing 60 MPH. You can see a picture and real all about them at www.shaylocomotives.comPosts: 23 | From: Capon Bridge, WV, USA | Registered: Dec 2002

The type of engine you need depends on the locale you model, and the era. A modern train could be pulled by most any newer diesel, from a GP-50 on up. But again, that all depends on the location. Try to find some pictures through Trainweb's railsearch, and RRHistorical.com
