I built a 6X9 N Scale layout with light, but strong wooden benchwork and foam scenery. I suspended it from a garage ceiling using garage door cables and steel fence posts across the bottom. I pulled it up and down with a boat trailer winch, and used a counter weight to balance it. Advantages: It was a dream to wire and scenick, and it was adjustable to any watcher's eye level. It could be pulled up out of the way; I parked a car under it. Disadvantages: If you don't splay the cables some, it'll sway. Height of scenery is not infinite. And if you don't use a safety stap, it could fall on something. My question: Has anyone else ever tried this or seen it used? How did it work for you? Unfortunately, I lost this layout in a divorce, but I'm currently rebuilding using the same idea on a much larger layout (7'X 22').
