I am using code 100 Atlas Flex track for my layout. I will be looking for regular turnouts and curved turnouts. (mainly #6 for a 24" - 30" radius) What are the best turnouts to use? Shinohara, Peco, Atlas???? Another ?. If I want to use DCC, what type of turnout do I use? Insulfrogs??? Thanks. I do have a couple of DCC books, but have not had time to read them as of yet, but I will.

In my experience Atlas makes a very good switch, Atlas Switches are also very DCC friendly as well. To read how to optamally wire Atlas switches for DCC, go to wiringfordcc.com . They also cover how to wire other brands of switches there as well.

The main thing tht you need to watch out for with dcc and turnouts is the distance between the points and the closure rail when the turnout is thrown. If the distance is too tight, the back side of the wheels may touch the back side of the points and cause a short.

Good point, Russ - just another reason to get and use an NMRA track guage - for whatever scale you are working in.
Tom Keep on Railroading PS Scratch building your own track and switches is another option - it's not hard, and gives you many more hours of fun for your dollar!

Thanks for your replies. Is it true that Atlas does not make curved turnouts? (code 100) I joined NMRA and have their info and will follow their guidelines. Time I do not have to make my own, so I will be forking over the money. You start something, and you want to be up and running asap. Thanks again, see ya.

Atlas used to make a curved turnout, but if I remember correctly, it was in 22" & 24" radius. If you want a larger radius than that you need to go with Shinohara.
