I am just getting into Trains and I was wondering what is the diffrence between train scales.

like HO = Scale
and so on...

Per MR, Sept. 97
Scale is the size of things on a model rr relative to the actual real like things on a real rr
Z- 1:220, approx length to a 50 ft car, 2 1/4"
N- 1:160 approx length to a 50 ft car, 3 3/4"
HO-1:87 approx length to a 50 ft car, 7"
S-1:64 approx length to a 50 ft car, 9 1/4
O-1:48 approx length to a 50 ft car, 12 1/2

Gauge, is the distance between the inside of the heads of track rails.
