I've heard a lot of other people's reasons for being a model railroader: "It's fun! I can be artistic and creative. I can be the operator of a quasi-prototypical railroad. I can take these great pictures. I can use my superior computer skills." Etc.,etc. For me, the payoff is in BEING GOD!: I can create an entire alternate universe right from my mind. And I am in complete control of every detail.I can make the world as new and pristine or as ancient and weathered as my heart desires. I can freeze a moment in time for as long as I want. I can make it any season (I'll admit the thunderstorm wasn't a good idea)... It is very difficult to exert much control over the seemingly random and chaotic real world, except in the tiniest of venues. As a model railroader I AM GOD AND I AM IN CONTROL! I can succumb to my egomania! And and everyone thinks I'm just having fun playing with my toys. Now if I can just get these little figures to worship me...

Very, well put. I like the playing god aspect as well. I have conceptualised an entire unvierse in which I can model out all my fantasies and desires. Well I guess nookie in the dome car still has to wait but for the rest of them model railroading is my medium of expressing them.

For me, it is not so much "playing God" as it is simple escapism...
