I started an HO layout in my basement about 1yr ago, however, after a few months, space became an issue. I packed it all up and put it away. Since then i've kind of been itching.
I've been thinking i might give N a try. What i was planning however was to do soemthing much smaller, that would be, say half the size of my computer desk, therefore approx. 3feet wide x 2foot deep.
Because i'm new at this, i'm not really sure if this is a realistic goal. I've searched the Internet but most of the layouts i've found are huge.

Tim I don't have an answer because I'm new too. I'm looking fowared to what the experts are saying because I'm in the same boat, plus I have to move every couple of years. I have found some good books online and in the hobby shops. I would go grab a few to get some ideas.
Good Luck

A little late , but in case you are still interested- let me suggest that you look at the YAHOO group devoted to Small Layout Design.
It has many members, and because of the expertise, and helpfullness of the members hundreds of people seek solutions involving (mostly) modestly sized to miniature railroads. There are other groups, such as the rail marine group and urban modelers, that also focus on cramped scenarios that use little space. So Googleup "Yahoo Groups", and perhaps come back here with whatever help you derive there for the benefit of this site. Good-Luck, PJB
