Where do you live? Does the local rail scenery interest you? If so, why not model your local lines. Or you could purchase a book of plans from a hobby store. Best of all, get a piece of paper, sketch out some lines on it, refine it to conform to standards (there is a limit to how tight turns can be or how steep the grade can be), throw in buildings as appropriate, and just have fun. Also, leave yourself some room for growth. Do not try to plan and build the entire layout in one shot. Let it evolve over time.
